What is IPM?
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a
systems approach that combines preventive techniques, non-chemical pest control
methods, and the wise use of pesticides with preference for products that are
least harmful to human health and the environment. It is not the total
elimination of pesticides but an alternate approach to traditional pest control
measures. Complete reliance, in the past, on pesticides alone for pest control
allowed certain pests to develop resistance, created potential human exposure
to harmful chemicals, produced unsound environmental contamination, and created
a threat to non target species and pesticide waste. IPM consists of routine
inspection and monitoring with treatment only when pests are actually present,
thus reducing traditional, routine pesticide application treatment (monthly
sprays) whether pests were present or not.
How
did I get Bed Bugs?
Cleanliness has noting to do with the pressence of bedbug. Clutter, however, does make it more difficult to perform a proper inspection or a through service. Since bedbugs hide in small crevices, they can travel with luggage, furniture, clothing, boxes, etc. This is how they move between hotels, homes and apartments. Used furniture, particularly bed frames and mattressesm are of greatest risk of harboring bed bugs and their eggs. They may be present in vacant apartements hiding
in cracks and creveices since they may survive months without a blood meal. Bed bugs may travel between nearby apartments through voids in walls and holes through which wires and pipes pass.
How
many eggs do bed bugs lay?
Under perfect conditions, a female
will lay approximately 3 eggs per day.
Under typical conditions, a female will lay from 5-7 eggs per week. Over a life-time, which can be from 6-18
months, a female can lay anywhere from 200-500 eggs.
I have
roaches. If I treat now, when can I expect to see results?
While sprays work faster than baits,
producing dead roaches within in minutes, the baits used at Pest Control Systems
of NY are much more persistent, resulting in more complete kills after 7 to 10
days.
How
can I tell if my bites are coming from bed bugs?
It is difficult to tell the cause of
any bite. Even physicians misdiagnose bed bug bites with scabies, mosquito
bites, chicken pox, or allergic reactions. Also, everyone reacts differently to
insect bites. Some people experience itching and swelling, while others have no
reaction at all. The best way to identify bed bug bites is to look for signs of
bed bugs in and around where you sleep.
What
guarantee can you give me that rodents won’t die in my wall, or even outside
where I can see them?
Contrary to what most people believe,
there is no poison bait that will make rodents “go outside and die”. The best ways to prevent rodents from dying
behind walls or hard to reach areas are with the use of snap traps, glue traps,
or live animal cages.
How
long will it take to get rid of my rodent problem?
That
will depend on the size of the present infestation. Some minor infestations are
eliminated in as little as 2 weeks, while large scale infestations may take
many months to completely be controlled. Most baits used are anticoagulants
which are slow acting poisons. Death occurs after 1 - 2 weeks post
ingestion. The main benefit of anticoagulants over other poisons is that the
time taken for the poison to induce death means that the rats do not associate
death with eating the poison.
